So you want to cancel your stress out? Good for you!
Well, what caused your stress in the first place? Usually it's
caused by something you didn't do, or should have done, or you can't
decide what to do!
Simple, do what you should do, then you won't agonise over what you haven't
done, and get decisive about what you ought to do. But how easy is it to
actually put it into practise? It's not easy at all.
You know don't you, that just because you have decided consciously to do
something, you won't get the best results? That's because change has to
occur within your subconscious mind, not your conscious mind.
You see, your conscious mind does the thinking, the strategizing with logic
and reason, the detail planning, the analysing, while your subconscious mind is
the doer, the action-taker, the behavioural responder, the emotional part of
you.
You can tell yourself as much as you want that you will do something, that
you need to do it, want to do it, should do it, must do it, have to do it, will
try to do it, and you know what happens, don't you? That's right, it
hardly ever works effectively and it doesn't get done!!
How's that for frustration? How's that for self-respect? How's
that for feeling productive and a go-getter? Bad news, isn't it?
The good news is that you can change and get the results you want in your
life, through practising easy stress management techniques that work with your
subconscious mind, rather than your conscious mind.
In fact, your brain's resources are devoted to approximately 5/6 of the brain
for your subconscious mind, and only 1/6th for your conscious mind. Guess
where emotion and imagination are located? That's right, they are created
by your subconscious, not your conscious self, so guess what wins over logic and
reason and rationale every time?? Your emotions and imagination
does.
Think about this and imagine this for a moment:
You have to go and do your housework, so imagine getting the dusting cloth,
damping it down, and beginning to wipe off all surfaces, and imagine how long
that annoying job is going to take...
Now imagine that you finally finish the dusting, and now you have to vacuum
or sweep out, and you know how long that boring job takes...
Clearly picture this: then you will get a bucket and fill it with hot soapy
water and get the mop and rinse the mop first, and then you're going to mop this
place out.
And by the time your mind runs through all of this, and imagines how hard,
long, boring and tiresome it is, and fills with resentment that you have to do
it when you would rather be outdoors and having fun, chilling out, and catching
up with great friends who will miss you if you aren't there, then hey, it's no
contest is it? You're not cleaning house today, are you? In fact,
your imagination beat your logical mind that said, "but we have to do the
cleaning today because I haven't got time tomorrow."
So, your logical mind will lose, especially if you have trained yourself to
respond to the "it's hard, it's boring, it's difficult, it's no fun"
thoughts and feelings. That's why the conscious mind finds it so difficult
to change, because we don't imagine the task as easy, fun, quick and causing us
to feel good.
So, proudly imagine for a moment that you have just finished doing your
cleaning, you look around you and your floors are all sweet and clean, all
surfaces are shiny and polished, everything is tidy and in it's place, and even
the feel of the place has that satisfied feel of being clean, inviting, and
fresh. Doesn't that feel so good now, that it might make you leap up and
get stuck into the housework, particularly if you hold onto those proud feelings
of having accomplished something good and worthwhile, and the image in your
mind's eye of a lovely, clean, tidy and inviting home.
Stress occurs because we are experiencing that inner conflict of "I
should do this" versus "I would rather be enjoying xyz".
Or, you might have inner conflict or feel emotional (angry, or sad, or
frustrated or guilty) because of something you didn't do and should have
done. So you still get to experience inner stress anyway.
And that's no fun at all.
